Traffic… How Do We Get Traffic?

There are literally too many possible ways to get traffic for me to mention all of them here.  BUT, the first step to getting, traffic plain and simply, should always be determining your keyword phrases!

If you go out and start submitting articles, bookmarking, submitting your site to directories, link exchanges, or anything else that you can do to get traffic, without first spending some time on keyword research… your site will be dead in the water without ever understanding why it sunk to begin with :(

Getting you website listed in the search engines via various traffic methods is important, but if you are going to do that then you MUST complete the work upfront first.  Take for example this blog… I decided that I wanted to brand my name and so my chosen keyword phrase is simply that… Shannon Lueck.  And if you type that into Google, you will see that this blog is listed in both the number 1 and number 2 positions.  Granted there isn’t a lot of competition for my name, but that is exactly the kind of keyword phrase you want to find when you are starting out.

What I am trying to say is please don’t be so obsessed with the traffic, UNTIL you have figured out the best possible phrases to target for your market.  Once you have this done, go wild… write a bunch of articles, complete some link exchanges (or better yet, one-way or three-way link exchanges), start bookmarking… plain and simply GET PEOPLE TO LINK TO YOUR SITE as much as you can.  Because now that you have done the legwork upfront, you will be getting a lot of traffic :)

I explain exactly how to do this in my Search Engine Optimization Training Guide  so if you already have it, study it!!!  If not, click on the link and get it and then study it!

This first step is absolutely VITAL to your business and if you want to succeed you must complete it!  Good luck and as always please post any comments/questions below :)

SEO is a strange thing. It was easy when I started, to get the search engines to raise a phrase to the top. But the longer I work at this, the longer I realize it takes more than just search engines to get the job done. In 2004, the phrase Coolest Woman on the Planet took my site to page one, space one on google in about 7 days with no real inbound links. It’s still there. But just this past summer, it took almost two weeks to bring another site to the top of Google’s first page with the phrase Make a Million Online. Both phrases are searchable and have multiple searches.

Your keyword phrase article describes the exact methods I used to bring both sites to the top. It does work, and articles that drive traffic using those keyword phrases are an effective means of driving traffic too.

Thanks for this post, Shannon. It’s just what I needed at the moment. I’m aware that I can get a bit bogged down with detail and wanting to get things just right. I’ve been anxious that with the Golden Thread program, I’m not as far along in the process as I wanted to be, because I’ve spent a lot of time researching all my keywords for each Cash Cannon site, trying to ensure I’ve chosen the best/most suitable ones I can. I found your post reassuring, that I have done the right thing, taking the time to find and feel confident with the keywords I’ve chosen. Now I’m ready to embed them in my sites and start getting that traffic. Thanks.

slueck Says:

Thanks Jan… I’m happy to hear that others really have used the method so they can comment on it :)

You are welcome Gaye… keep going… where ever you are currently, simply keep going… you’ll get there and good job for sticking with it! :)

Best Wishes,
Shannon

Another great post Shannon.

I have also found that Keywords are very essential - even with Articles as they can get very good ranks in the search engines themselves if you do the keywords right (long tail keywords). Also, the reason I like articles so much for traffic is the fact that they count as external links back to your site - if you submit them to several article directories. If your article gets picked up by someone else’s site (if others use your article for free content on their site) or if another ezine publishes your article - then that just boosts your external links even more and increases traffic as well. It’s a Win-Win!

TYS,
Andy

Shannon,

I’m starting to implement the strategy you suggested for article marketing, but I have a couple of complementary questions. Is it OK to ask them here or would it be easier/better for you if I go back to your postings in June/July and ask the questions there?

I’ve just finished my first flash on the game site I’m building - http://www.4mgk.com/gamecentral my target is free to play games, since some gamers don’t have the cash to keep paying for online pay to play games. There’s a good size niche for free to play gamers…and it’s growing due to the economy downslide. The pay to play niche is still pretty strong too, so I’ll be hitting that side too with another site shortly. I’ve not finished all the pages yet, but it’s getting there. I’m using adsense and will add some affiliate banners too on some of the other pages.

I’m going to be offering free gamezines to download as well as subscriptions in the store. I’ve done my meta tags and keywords, I get good adsense feeds and my wordpress.com blog is set up now too. I know I should do some articles, I just wish I knew what else to do to get things flowing…any ideas? I don’t know how to set up those automated rss feeds and such to get my blog moving. I wish I did, but that stuff is still over my head.

If you know about any sites that offer a summary about a site - like how good it is and if there’s points to improve, let me know. I’ve heard of one, but haven’t found it…yet!

Thanks for all the info about traffic, I’m planning on using your guide once the site is done. I just hope that I can offer some great info and get some money at the same time.

Have a great holiday season!

Starrweaver,

Nice intro video. For the past few years, as a hobby, I have been modding and have recently “retired” in order to keep my bank manager happy ;)

I recently set up a site (a blog but in a sort of magazine format) here: http://www.topnotchmods.net/

but doubt I will have time to develop it. My last game I released, Viking Invasion II (September 23rd 2008), received over 15,000 views and over 450 posts on the main site for that game engine but not a single sign up or purchase of an affiliate product.lol.

VI2’s extremely popular and has had some great testimonials, and a best-seller pc gaming magazine may be featuring it in the new year, but it is illegal to charge money for mods so despite having about a half dozen under my belt I cannot make a penny from them directly.

I think there must be a huge market for mods though - if you read my words on my site then I explain why.

Roy Rapp Says:

Hey Shannon!

Just a newbie here from Alex Jefferys class, he mentions you quite often. Just wanted to check you out and now I know why he talks so kind about you! Wasn’t sure if I should include my blog link or not, after seeing yours, mine needs some help! (LOL) It is from the heart though and I will get better in time!

Just quickly, I am learning a lot from Alex and I trust him as well. I am trying to use his knowledge not only to capture a piece of this online thing but more so enhance my passion which is health and wellness! I hope to find a correct way to actually include my passion on my blog but not sure if I should right now?

Take care and all the best to you Shannon!
Roy (A Newbie for now!)

slueck Says:

Hi Roy,

Wow… I’ve been REALLY bad about updating this blog… I’m sorry to everyone that reads it :(

Very interesting, I didn’t know that Alex Jeffery’s had mentioned me… that is very exciting to me to know… thanks and thank you Alex if you read this :)

I guess whether you should incorporate your passion with your blog is a matter of where you want your blog to go right now… my passions are my business, my family and traveling… but to date I have pretty much kept my family and traveling out of this blog… I’m not saying I’ll never incorporate them into this, just haven’t done it yet.

Thanks for the comment Roy!

Best Wishes,
Shannon

Joshua Collins Says:

Shannon,

Very nice post! And a great eye opener…

I was like so many others that set-up their blog with out thinking. I just wanted to get it up and running.

I should have done my homework first and decided the keywords I would theme my blog around and then research those keywords and what not.

But, I guess it is never too late to do that. So, I will put aside some time and work on building my keyword lists for my blog.

Thanks Dean… I think your blog is nice as well… good info too :) And yes, enjoying what you are doing changes the outcome immensely.

Joshua - Yes, very common for most people to do, but it is amazing what can be accomplished with your sites when you complete the work :) Have Fun :)

Best Wishes,
Shannon

dave Says:

Shannon, bit off topic but can I ask what equipment you use to make your video’s?

Cheers

slueck Says:

Hi Dave,

It depends on which videos you are talking about… if it is a video where I am speaking and you see me, then I simply use my webcam and then if needed I edit it using my HP editing software (that came with my computer) then I use to upload them to YouTube and copy the code and place it on my website. Now I simply turn it into a flash video and upload it directly to my site.

If on the other hand you are talking about videos that show my computer screen, I use Camtasia Studio for that… I got a discount purchasing it through Techsmith (using my son’s kindergarten status to get a student discount) so it was only $179… but still not a cheap piece of software… worth every penny though since I am doing a lot of videos these days!

I hope this answer helps Dave!

Best Wishes,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I am a total newbie but i am taking part in Alex Jeffreys coaching programme. I have been following you for a while now ever since i saw your case study with Michael Cheeney. Do you go on twitter and what are your thoughts about it? I am trying to try several traffic strategies to get traffic to my site.

I really enjoy your posts they are very helpful.

slueck Says:

Hello Christine,

Wow… thanks for following me… even though I haven’t been great about updates through the holiday season :(

I’ve done a little bit with Twitter, but not enough so that I feel comfortable either reccomending it or not. I know a lot of martketers are now using Twitter and Facebook a lot and I’m sure they wouldn’t spend their time with it if it wasn’t worth it at least on some level.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help Christine!

Best Wishes,
Shannon

dave Says:

Thanks for the reply, I was talking about the videos of you talking into the camera, I was just surprised at the great quality from a webcam:)

Theresa Mayhew Says:

Hi Shannon,
I heard about you from a video I watched with Michael Cheney. His coaching program was more than I could spend, but I did get your SEO Traffic ebook. Like many other ebooks, it sat on my C:drive shelf . . . until NOW!

I’m taking it down off the shelf, dusting it off and will use it as my traffic bible.:)

Glad you’re back to blogging. I enjoy the material you offer. I did find a mentor, Alex Jeffreys. I see several of my class mates have stopped by to visit with you, too.

Happy New Year,
Theresa
BTW, you’re only about 3 hours from me. Maybe some day we’ll get to meet in person.

slueck Says:

Hi Theresa,

Thank you for your kind words… I appreciate it! I like your blog too… you seem to be better at posting than me :)

Good luck with your business Theresa!

Best wishes,
Shannon
