.com vs .info Domains… Does it Make a Difference?

I guess I’m kind of shifting my focus on this site based on what people are asking me… so today I’m going to tackle this question:

Does it matter whether I purchase a .com or a .info domain name?

I’ve heard both sides from various marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most would give to that question is yes, it does make a difference. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is obvious to see this is true because look at the search results you get when you enter something into the search engine, the top sites are almost always going to be .com or .org. Yes, this is generally true, but I have another side to that statement that you should consider…

There are many, many, many more .com and .org websites on the Internet than there are .info. This could also explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domains in their top listings. I am not saying that it is not possible that the search engines prefer .com or .org, just bringing up a point.

I myself have mostly .com domains. I like them because when people enter websites into their address bar they tend to enter .com. So, by simply having a .com you will ensure they go to your website. If the website you wanted in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then when the person goes to type it into their address bar, chances are that unless they were really paying attention, they will be typing in .com. Therefore going to the other website.

I do have some .info domains however and as for a search engine optimization stand point I have found them to rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, it comes down to your preference. Do you care if they accidentally type in .com instead of .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will help you chose which domain name extension you go with.

Since I now seem to be answering my most common questions on this blog, and if you have a question you’d like answered, let me know… It just may get answered here :)

I have both .com and .info sites, and they work equally well from an SEO standpoint. I agree, most people automatically type in .com, so depending on how much of your traffic types in the site address, you may want to stick to that difference. Once a site is optimized for click through rates, I believe it doesn’t make much difference.

Great article! Thanks.
